The Importance of Forgiving

The Importance of Forgiving One Another.

β€œAnd be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” β€” Ephesians 4:32

Forgiveness is at the heart of the Christian faith. Yet it can be one of the hardest things to practise, especially when the hurt is deep.

Someone may have betrayed your trust, disappointed you, spoken against you, or caused pain that you still carry today. The Bible does not pretend that such wounds are insignificant. Instead, God calls us to deal with them in a way that prevents bitterness from taking control of our hearts.

Forgiveness Is a Christian Responsibility

Colossians 3:13 tells believers to forgive one another, just as Christ has forgiven us.

Forgiveness does not mean saying, β€œWhat happened doesn’t matter.” It means refusing to allow the offence to become the controlling force in your life.

We forgive because we have first experienced the grace and forgiveness of God.

Forgiveness Does Not Mean Approval

Forgiving someone does not mean approving of what they did.

It does not mean pretending the offence never happened. It does not automatically restore trust, and it does not mean remaining in an unsafe or harmful situation.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are related, but they are not always the same thing. Rebuilding a relationship may require repentance, accountability, changed behaviour and time.

You can forgive while still exercising wisdom and maintaining healthy boundaries.

The Spiritual Danger of Unforgiveness

Hebrews 12:15 warns us about a β€œroot of bitterness”.

Bitterness can begin with one painful experience, but if we continually feed the hurt, it can influence how we think, speak and respond to others.

Sometimes the person who offended us has moved on, while we continue carrying what happened.

God does not want yesterday’s wound controlling today’s life.

Forgiveness Can Also Benefit Our Health

Forgiveness is first and foremost a spiritual matter, but releasing persistent resentment may also support our emotional and physical wellbeing.

Research on forgiveness has associated it with benefits such as lower stress and anxiety, fewer symptoms of depression, better emotional wellbeing, healthier relationships, and, in some studies, improvements in sleep and cardiovascular measures such as blood pressure. These effects vary between people, and forgiveness should not be treated as a substitute for medical or mental-health care.

There is an important principle here: what we continually carry emotionally can affect more than our thoughts.

Constant anger and resentment can keep us in a state of stress. Forgiveness can help us stop continually rehearsing the offence and begin moving toward peace.

Jesus Gave Us the Greatest Example

While suffering on the cross, Jesus said:

β€œFather, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” β€” Luke 23:34

Jesus demonstrated forgiveness in the midst of suffering.

His example reminds us that forgiveness is not simply based on whether somebody deserves it. Christian forgiveness flows from the grace we ourselves have received.

Forgiveness Can Be a Process

Sometimes we pray, β€œLord, I forgive them,” but painful memories return.

Healing may take time.

When the memory returns, we can choose again not to feed resentment or seek revenge. We can bring the pain honestly before God and ask Him to help us respond with wisdom, grace and peace.

Forgiveness does not necessarily erase the memory. It changes the power we allow that memory to have over us.

A Question for the Heart

Is there somebody you need to forgive?

It could be a relative, friend, church member, husband or wife, colleagueβ€”or even someone who has never apologised.

Do not allow yesterday’s offence to become tomorrow’s prison.

Release the hurt. Choose grace. Pursue peace.

Takeaway

Forgive because you have been forgiven.

Forgiveness can bring spiritual freedom, encourage emotional healing and help us move forward without allowing bitterness to dominate our lives.

β€œFor if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” β€” Matthew 6:14
