Understanding God’s Love, Mercy and the Value of Every Soul
Scripture Focus: Luke 15:1β7 | Matthew 18:12β14 | John 10:11
Jesus told the parable of the lost sheep to reveal God’s love for sinners and to challenge those who looked down on others.
In Luke 15:1β2, tax collectors and sinners were gathering around Jesus to hear Him teach. However, the Pharisees and scribes complained because Jesus welcomed sinners and ate with them.
In response, Jesus told the story of a shepherd who had one hundred sheep but discovered that one was missing.
Jesus asked:
βWhat man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?β β Luke 15:4 (KJV)
Jesus wanted His listeners to understand something important: God does not reject people simply because they have lost their way. He calls them to repentance and offers them the opportunity to be restored.
The shepherd did not leave because the ninety-nine were unimportant. He went searching because one sheep was lost and in danger.
This teaches us that God’s love is personal. Every individual matters to Him.
Sometimes people feel forgotten, rejected or unworthy because of past mistakes. But the Good Shepherd reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy.
The one matters just as much as the ninety-nine.
The Pharisees questioned why Jesus associated with sinners, but Jesus demonstrated that His mission was to call sinners to repentance.
Luke 19:10 declares:
βFor the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.β
The lost sheep represents those who have wandered from God through sin, temptation, disappointment or spiritual neglect.
Jesus did not come merely to associate with those who considered themselves righteous. He came to offer salvation to those who recognised their need for Him.
God’s mercy is not permission to continue in sin; it is an invitation to turn away from sin and return to Him.
When the shepherd found the lost sheep, he carried it home rejoicing.
Jesus explained in Luke 15:7 that there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.
What a powerful message!
The return of one lost soul is not something insignificant. It is a reason for celebration.
God values genuine repentance, forgiveness and spiritual restoration.
This parable also challenges how we treat those who have stopped attending church or drifted away from their faith.
Are we so comfortable with the ninety-nine that we forget about the one who is missing?
Do we reach out to struggling members, encourage the discouraged and welcome those who sincerely desire to return?
The church should reflect the compassion of Jesus rather than the judgemental attitude displayed by the Pharisees.
This does not mean ignoring sin or compromising biblical truth. It means speaking the truth with love and helping people find their way back to God.
A caring church does not simply count those who attend. It also cares about those who are absent.
Jesus told this parable because the religious leaders had failed to recognise the value of the very people He came to save.
The shepherd’s concern for one lost sheep reveals God’s compassion for every individual.
The ninety-nine were not forgotten, but the one who was lost needed rescuing.
And that is the heart of the Gospel.
Jesus declares in John 10:11:
βI am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.β
His ultimate demonstration of love was giving His life so that humanity could receive forgiveness and salvation through Him.
Every soul matters to God. No one is too insignificant to receive His love.
Jesus came to seek and save the lost. His mission includes calling sinners to repentance.
Heaven rejoices over repentance. One person returning to God is worth celebrating.
The church must show compassion. We should encourage, support and seek to restore those who have wandered away.
Perhaps today you are among the ninety-nine, faithfully walking with God. If so, remember your responsibility to show compassion towards others.
Or perhaps you are the one who has wandered away, feeling distant from God.
The message of Jesus is clear: You have not been forgotten. God’s invitation to return remains open.
The Good Shepherd did not search for the one because it was more important than the ninety-nine.
He searched because it was lost.
And that one soul mattered.
