Fasting: Drawing Closer to God

Fasting Drawing Closer To God

Fasting is not simply about eating lessβ€”it is about seeking God more.

Biblical fasting is a time when we willingly set aside food for a period so that we can focus more intentionally on prayer, God’s Word, worship and seeking His direction.

Jesus teaches about fasting in Matthew 6:16–18, reminding us that fasting should not be done to impress others. It is a personal act of devotion between us and God.

@NSLIVE_POST β€” True fasting is not about showing people what you have given up; it is about drawing closer to God.

The Spiritual Benefits

Fasting can help develop discipline, humility and greater focus in prayer.

When hunger comes, it can become a reminder to pray and seek God. Instead of simply thinking about food, we can say:

β€œLord, I need You more than the things that temporarily satisfy me.”

In Acts 13:2–3, believers worshipped and fasted while seeking God’s direction.

Fasting does not force God to answer our prayers. Rather, it helps us humble ourselves and become more attentive to Him.

The Physical Benefits

Although Christian fasting is primarily spiritual, certain forms of fasting have also been studied for possible physical benefits.

Depending on the person and type of fasting, these may include support for weight management, blood-sugar control, and insulin sensitivity. Fasting may also help us become more aware of our eating habits and develop greater self-discipline.

However, fasting should be approached wisely. People with medical conditions, those taking certain medications, pregnant women, or anyone with a history of eating disorders should seek appropriate medical advice before fasting.

@NSLIVE_POST β€” Take care of your spirit, but also use wisdom in caring for your body.

More Than an Empty Stomach

Isaiah 58 reminds us that fasting should affect more than our appetite. God is also concerned about our heart, behaviour and how we treat others.

So after fasting, ask yourself:

Did I pray more? Did I draw closer to God? Did I learn something about myself? Is God changing my heart?

That is where the deeper value of fasting can be found.

Jesus said in Matthew 4:4:

β€œMan shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Our bodies hunger for food, but our souls should hunger for God. β€” @NSLIVE_POST

Fast with wisdom. Pray with purpose. Seek God sincerely.
